Mangia Bene

The photo itself was taken in January 2013, through the window at the Botanical Garden’s Spink Pavilion building where they hold the wedding receptions. I liked the way things were set up, I liked how the pale winter light broke through the glass and was thrown about the room by dozens of water and wine glasses.

For this image, I thought about all the people I know with whom I’ve shared meals, like the people I went to high school with. We’d pop across the street in the morning and get bagels fresh from the oven, and by the time we went back across Second Avenue, the butter was thoroughly melted, or the cream cheese was softened and warm. Sometimes, we’d go to the deli instead, and get wonderous things like stuffed grape leaves for breakfast.

We were New York City kids.
